Lawyer R. Gordon Murray received the 2019 J. Michael MacDonald Access to Justice Award from the Canadian Bar Association – Nova Scotia.

According to Legal Aid Nova Scotia’s press release, the award recognizes outstanding contributions to improving access to justice for Nova Scotians who face social and economic barriers. The release added that Murray was the first executive director of the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission and devoted his career to ensuring access to justice for the most vulnerable and historically marginalized people in the province. His work has truly had a positive impact on the rights and well-being of Nova Scotians.

Murray, who was named as a Queen’s Counsel, in 1981, retired as executive director in 1994. He has continued to be a valued member of the legal aid team by serving as a director, continuing on legal aid committees and serving as a volunteer member of NSLA’s internal Executive Committee.
