Five new associates join Bereskin & Parr

Bereskin & Parr LLP announced that the following have joined the firm as associates: Denver Bandstra, Callum Lootsma, Andrea Uetrecht, Shuo Xing and Lawrence Yu.
According to the firm’s press release, Bandstra is a member of the engineering and technology group. His practice focuses on mechanical patent prosecution.
He completed his juris doctor at Osgoode Hall Law School and his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering at Queen’s University. During his time at Osgoode, Bandstra was the co-president of the Intellectual Property Society, received the Best Blog in IP Law and Technology Prize sponsored by a major Canadian law firm and placed second and third in consecutive years at the International Patent Drafting Competition. During his last year at Osgoode, he spent a semester as a visiting student researcher at Stanford University where he studied the patentability of inventions created by artificial intelligence and the effectiveness of tech transfer within universities.
Lootsma is also a member of the engineering and technology group. His practice focuses on patent drafting and prosecution, with an emphasis on mechanical and material science innovations. Prior to being admitted to the bar, he was both a summer and articling student with the firm.
He received his juris doctor from the University of Toronto. During law school, Callum co-chaired the technology and intellectual property group.
Uetrecht’s practice focuses on drafting and prosecution of patents in the life sciences and biotechnology space.
She completed her JD at Osgoode Hall and her doctor of philosophy in cell and developmental biology at University of North Carolina. As part of her PhD research project, she developed molecular tools for studying cellular functions. She also completed a master of science in molecular biology and biochemistry at Simon Fraser University and a bachelor of science in biochemistry at Trent University.
Xing is a member of the life sciences group. Her practice focuses on prosecution and litigation of patent matters, especially in the chemical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields. She works closely with clients including startups, universities and multinational corporations in the prosecution and drafting of patents. Xing also participates in the analysis of patent issues including filing strategies, validity, infringement and freedom-to-operate.
Prior to being admitted to the bar, she was a summer and articling student with the firm. During her time at University of Toronto Law School, she participated in an IP-related externship at the Structural Genomics Consortium.
Yu’s practice focuses on patent drafting, protection and opinion work, with a particular focus on electrical and computer technologies.
He completed his juris doctor at Osgoode Hall and his bachelor of applied science in nanotechnology engineering at the University of Waterloo. Prior to attending law school, Yu worked as a technical consultant in the IP practice group of a full-service law firm; as an engineering assistant at several semiconductor, telecommunication, and aerospace companies; and as a biomaterials research assistant at a major U.S. university.
