Trade secrets are known to allow businesses to protect confidential and commercially sensitive information in perpetuity. Trade secrets are unique in that they provide protection — free from any registration requirements — so long as they are kept secret.

Trade secrets are commonly found in such things as confidential processes, formulae, recipes and specifications. The formula used to create Coca-Cola is a well-known example of a trade secret.
