The Canadian Centre for Gender + Sexual Diversity (CCGSD) announced that it has hired Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah to be its new executive director.

According to CCGSD’s press release, Owusu-Akyeeah will officially begin working at CCGSD on July 6, 2020. Her appointment follows a collaborative panel-based hiring process and she was unanimously recommended by the six board, staff and community members. Her knowledge, professional experience, lived experiences and socially just approaches to leadership make her the ideal person to lead CCGSD into the future.

The release adds that Owusu-Akyeeah is a passionate black feminist, an anti-racist and social justice advocate who has participated in and led community organizing through Ottawa Dyke March and Harmony House Women's Shelter. In 2017, she was a recipient of a Femmy Award for her feminist and youth leadership in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

Owusu-Akyeeah also brings a wider perspective to her work with a master’s in international affairs and experience working at both Global Affairs Canada and Oxfam Canada.
