The founders of the Canadian Competition Law Moot, an annual mock trial for law students, announced on June 29 that the event has been renamed the Adam F. Fanaki Competition Law Moot.

According to the Competition Bureau’s press release, Adam Fanaki passed away on Feb. 15, 2020, after a long battle with brain cancer. The release notes that Fanaki was a brilliant competition lawyer and a highly respected leader in the international antitrust community. He practised at leading Canadian law firms and acted as senior deputy commissioner of the Mergers Branch at the Competition Bureau. While at the bureau, he played a key role in the design and implementation of major reforms to the Competition Act.

Fanaki’s memory will be honoured at the next awards gala of Adam F. Fanaki Competition Law Moot, to be held in March 2021 in Toronto, or virtually if necessary.
