Tasked with addressing the legacy of Indian residential schools, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) issued 94 recommendations in June 2015.

Among them, it urged Parliament to repeal Section 43 of the Criminal Code, which provides a defence for the “reasonable correction” of a child by a parent or teacher. The Trudeau government has committed itself to implementing the commission’s recommendations, including this one.
