EagleWoman named to tribal Supreme Court

Angelique EagleWoman, whose Dakota name is Wambdi A. Was'te Winyan, has been appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of the Lake Traverse Reservation in South Dakota.

According to the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyat (SWO) official website, EagleWoman is the first SWO member to be appointed to the court. She has served as a pro tempore tribal judge in several tribal court systems at the trial and appellate levels, the first Indigenous law dean in Canada and a distinguished law professor. A regular contributor to The Lawyers Daily, she currently is the co-director of the Native American Law & Sovereignty Institute at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minn.
