De-amalgamation dreams elusive, report says

Undoing a municipal amalgamation is feasible but generally ill-advised, according to a report from the Fraser Institute.

The report noted that while local restructuring to combine municipalities is commonplace across Canada as urban centres grow, the touted cost-effective benefits are actually few and far between.

As a result, residents often push back when presented with an amalgamation plan. More pointedly, they will sometimes muse post-amalgamation about the “good old days,” with some politicians and commentators agitating for de-amalgamation.
