Environmental law centre director says Canada a ‘laggard’ now

Calvin Sandborn, legal director of the environmental law centre at the University of Victoria’s faculty of law, says one of the most striking things to come out of the recent climate summit in Toronto of state and provincial leaders from across the Americas is how much of a “laggard” Canada has become.

“We used to be leaders on environmental issues. Now the government of Canada has become the unofficial spokesperson for the international oil industry at international climate change conferences,” he says.
