B.C. law firms warned about phony e-mails

The Law Society of British Columbia issued a Fraud Alert warning B.C. law firms and lawyers about fraudsters using e-mail scams to get them to release funds from their clients that they are holding.

According to the alert, a B.C. law firm redirected millions of dollars in sale proceeds that it was holding for a real estate client.

The firm received an e-mail with revised instructions from someone the firm believed was the client’s lender. In fact, the person was a fraudster. What is worrying is...
