Appeal court rules against media company, journalist in case involving press freedom

The Ontario Court of Appeal ruled on March 22 to uphold a production order that VICE Media and journalist Ben Makuch hand over to the RCMP communications Makuch had with Farah Shirdon, a Canadian accused of taking up arms with Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria.

VICE Media released a statement expressing its disappointment with the decision. No decision has been made whether the media firm will seek leave to appeal to the Supreme Court, according to counsel Iain MacKinnon of Linden & Associates....
