Amendment would reinstate Canadians’ right to hearing before citizenship stripped

A proposed amendment looks to put an end to Canadians being stripped of their citizenship without a court hearing.

Lorne WaldmanSince 1947, the law in Canada allowed for citizenship to be revoked if there was evidence a person had fraudulently represented himself or herself during the application process. Immigration officials had to go before the Federal Court to prove that a person had obtained their citizenship fraudulently before the officials could present that person’s name to the Governor in Council for revocation of citizenship.
