The tabling of legislation to legalize marijuana represents a seismic shift in drug policy in Canada. Advocates for a liberalized approach to our cannabis laws have long pointed out the futility of the current system, which has criminalized a fairly benign drug for nearly a century.

Our drug laws have saddled thousands of Canadians with criminal records every year for minor possession offences. This can have lifelong implications, even if incarceration is no longer likely.
