Law society approves absolute cap of $25,000 on referral fees

The Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC) on April 27 approved a fixed cap of $25,000 on referral fees.

In a vote of 41-8, with two abstentions, the LSUC’s Convocation adopted the recommendation in the report of the advertising and fee arrangements working group that looked to limit referral fees to 15 per cent of the first $50,000 charged in legal fees, with five per cent of all additional fees on top of that, up to a total of $25,000.
