Unvaccinated Quebec nurses face suspension as of Oct. 15

The Quebec order of nurses has announced that any members not vaccinated against COVID-19 will be suspended as of Oct. 15.

The Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) announced on Oct. 11 that the suspension of the right to practise would include members working in health institutions, social services, private seniors’ homes, private practice, medical imaging labs and “intermediate resources.”

The suspension would impact more than 4,000 OIIQ members, according to a news release.

“Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, we have encouraged our members to get vaccinated appropriately to protect themselves and the people they are called upon to serve in the practice of their profession,” said OIIQ president Luc Mathieu in the release.

Mathieu said he continues “to encourage them to do so,” noting that the “vast majority” of the OIIQ’s 80,000 members “have responded positively to our repeated appeals.”

“However, more than 4,000 of our members are not adequately protected and, as a result, are unable to provide service that protects the public. However, it is the primary mission of a professional order like the OIIQ to protect the public.”

The release goes to state the OIIQ will send e-mails to the unvaccinated members by Oct. 13.

The OIIQ’s move follows suit with that of Quebec’s Collège des Médecins, the province’s doctors’ order, which stated Sept. 30 that it, too, will suspend unvaccinated members as of Oct. 15. As of Sept. 30, 97 per cent of physicians had been vaccinated.

Several hundred people reportedly took to the streets of downtown Montreal on Oct. 9 to protest the mandatory vaccine policy and the impending suspension of unvaccinated health-care workers.

All of this sits against the backdrop of federal and provincial governments and various private business across Canada launching vaccine mandates as parts of the country battle a fourth wave of COVID-19 and its delta variant.
