Court upholds jail’s liability in inmate beating

Ontario’s top court has affirmed the province’s liability for injuries suffered by an inmate who was savagely beaten while in custody at the now-closed Don Jail in Toronto.

In Walters (Litigation guardian of) v. Ontario 2017 ONCA 53, the Court of Appeal upheld a lower court finding that correctional officials were negligent in placing inmate Jason Walters in the same unit as a violent member of a rival gang.
