Ontario jurors get counselling to deal with issues from trials

Ontario will soon provide jurors with free, confidential counselling to address trauma and other psychological issues arising from trials, a move lawyers and mental health professionals have welcomed as a positive first step.

“I think it’s a need that had been overlooked,” said William McDowell, partner at Lenczner Slaght and chair of the mental health task force at the Law Society of Upper Canada.

“We conscript jurors to do a very important job for us and in other circumstances where we’ve got people doing difficult jobs...
