News site loses copyright suit against Crown

A small online news service has lost the first round in its Federal Court fight to get damages for federal officials’ unpaid use and dissemination of its paywalled articles.

On Nov. 10, Federal Court Justice Robert Barnes threw out the claim of subscription-based Blacklock’s Reporter that the Crown should pay the four-year-old Ottawa startup $17,209 for a Department of Finance official’s unauthorized and unpaid internal distribution of two Blacklock’s articles to five of his colleagues.
