Miller Thomson adds Vancouver counsel

Gal Smolar has joined Miller Thomson's Vancouver office as counsel.

Smolar is a globally experienced corporate technology lawyer, licensed in British Columbia and Israel. He advises entrepreneurs, startup companies and investors as well as parties to M&A transactions involving innovative technology companies.

He has a wide high technology experience gained from over 15 years of focusing on financing of technology companies and technology transactions. He began his legal career in 1997 as an in-house legal team member for IBM Global Services.

Smolar was involved in early stage corporate investments as well as in negotiating software projects and strategic outsourcing agreements globally.

In 2000, Smolar joined an Israeli law firm where he represented general partners in the formation of their funds and its portfolio company investments. He also spent five years in the Netherlands representing multinational venture capital funds.

He led the formation of the first Israeli life science focused venture capital fund (2001) and in 2008 formed Russia’s first technology venture capital fund.

In 2009, Smolar moved to Canada and has been involved in the formation of Canadian technology accelerators and investment funds, acted for local and foreign venture capital funds and angel investors and participated as either company counsel or investor counsel in many M&A transactions of Vancouver based startups.
