CETA and CFTA: The impact of Canada’s sesquicentennial trade agreements

Canada’s 150th birthday present was set to include two new trade agreements. Both the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) and the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) were expected to come into force on July 1, (provisionally, in the case of CETA).

However, last minute disagreements, focused primarily on the dairy and pharmaceutical industries, stalled CETA’s provisional entry into force. CETA is now set to be provisionally applied on Sept. 21, 2017. Nonetheless, with the CFTA actually in force as scheduled, and CETA to...
