How soaring real estate prices affect separating spouses

In recent years, home prices in the Greater Toronto Area have experienced a year-over-year spike in sale prices. Although this is positive news for families' net worth, this trend has caused particular difficulty for separating spouses. Historically, it was common for one spouse to buy out the other spouse's interest in the matrimonial home upon separation, thereby mitigating the disruption in the children's lives and avoiding a real estate commission.
