Nunavut urges compliance with signage law in move to protect use of Inuit language

Nunavut is taking steps to protect Inuit languages by enforcing provisions of the Inuit Language Protection Act  and the Official Languages Act that apply to business signage and customer service communications.

The Inuit Language Protection Act was passed in 2008, but enforcement of certain sections was stayed as the government felt businesses and municipalities weren’t ready for the law to be implemented, said Nunavut’s language commissioner Helen Klengenberg.
