Mitchell Gropper, senior partner with Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy, has been installed as the chancellor of University Canada West (UCW) in Vancouver.

Gropper joined Farris in July 1998 after spending the majority of the previous 28 years with the Vancouver office of McCarthy Tétrault LLP. He served as that firm's managing partner from 1988 to 1990.

Prior to joining McCarthy, he spent three years as a professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ont.

Gropper will continue as the interim chair of the UCW board of governors in addition to accepting this new role.

Gropper has an active practice, often giving advice to boards of directors and independent committees of boards of directors; corporations and directors in “going private” transactions; income trusts and conversions; and in mergers and acquisitions of public and private corporations.

In his real estate practice, Gropper has been involved in various transactions, financings and complex debt restructurings including advising the City of Vancouver on the restructuring of the Olympic Village real estate project.

He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1990.
