Copyright decisions provide nuanced look at paywall-protected news articles

An Ottawa-based subscription news service has received two very different judgments from the courts regarding unauthorized access to its paywall protected articles.

In 2015, Blacklock’s Reporter (Blacklock’s) successfully sued a wine association for copyright infringement in Ottawa small claims court and was awarded $11,470 in compensatory damages and $2,000 in punitive damages.
