Medical diagnostic inventions excluded from the Canadian innovation agenda

Did you hear the one about the researcher who walks into her university's technology transfer office and says: “I have invented a way to identify chemotherapy responders based on clinical biomarkers. Can you help me commercialize this as a diagnostic?”

“Interesting,” responds the technology transfer officer, “but it’s probably not patent-eligible, and so it’s doubtful we can commercialize. Best of luck to you.”

The reader will be forgiven for not finding humour in this situation, and indeed this author wishes it was a joke. Unfortunately, it is...
