Clinics helping self-represented litigants with small claims court issues

Depending on their location, self-represented litigants heading to small claims court with pressing legal questions can get answers — pro bono.

Joe Thorne, Stewart McKelveyIt’s been a year and a bit since the Canadian Bar Association’s Newfoundland- Labrador branch, in partnership with the Public Legal Information Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, launched the CBA’s first small claims assistance clinic, which is staffed with about 30 volunteer lawyers.

The “summary legal advice” sessions take place once a month, and each meeting lasts a maximum of 20 minutes....
