Canadian challenge to softwood lumber duties shows importance of NAFTA: experts

A recent decision by the United States to impose duties on Canadian softwood lumber is heading to a binational panel of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to decide whether or not Canada is unfairly subsidizing lumber producers. Legal experts are saying it is too early to determine if Canada will be successful in this challenge as it has been in the past, but it does highlight the importance of keeping the dispute mechanism provisions of NAFTA in place as the agreement faces renegotiation....
