McCarthy partner Boniferro named deputy attorney general of Ontario

McCarthy Tétrault LLP partner and labour and immigration lawyer Paul Boniferro is Ontario’s new deputy attorney general.

Boniferro, who practises in both Toronto and Calgary, was a senior policy adviser to the Ontario minister of labour before joining the firm. In that role, he advised the government on changes to the Labour Relations Act, the Workers’ Compensation Act, the Employment Standards Act and the Pay Equity Act

At McCarthy Tétrault, he was retained by the government to offer advice on labour relations and employment issues. He also assisted federally and provincially regulated clients with matters of executive compensation, terminations, wrongful dismissals, grievance arbitration, collective agreement negotiations, human rights complaints, government relations, occupational health and safety issues, and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board claims. 

In his new role, which begins on Jan. 3, 2018, Boniferro will provide strategic advice to enable informed policy and program decisions affecting Ontario and beyond.

“I am deeply honoured to have been chosen to become the deputy attorney general at a time when our province deals with some critical issues, including shifting demographics, tremendous technological advances, and evolving global competitive dynamics,” said Boniferro. 

“I hope to bring my unique insights from my work with the government and my leadership and other roles at McCarthy Tétrault to bear to help ensure we continue to have a fair and accessible justice system reflecting the needs of diverse communities across government and the province.”

David Leonard, chief executive officer of McCarthy Tétrault offered his congratulations to Boniferro.

“The appointment of one of our partners as the most senior executive legal counsel in the Ontario public service is something we are tremendously proud of,” he said.
