Ottawa-based technology law and intellectual property law firm Smart & Biggar/Fetherstonhaugh has entered into a partnership with an organization that supports and promotes technology startups in the capital region.

Invest Ottawa offers startup incubation and mentorship to new companies, helps accelerate existing businesses, works to attract global business to Ottawa and retain local ones, and assists companies with their commercialization and marketing efforts.

Under the new agreement, Smart & Biggar will deliver programs designed for early stage startups, growing businesses and established entrepreneurs, including free monthly IP clinics and quarterly IP master classes. The classes will be held at Invest Ottawa’s Bayview Yards Innovation Centre.

“For Canadian companies to grow and compete in the world market they need to be savvier users of IP,” said Elliott Simcoe, national practice group leader, technology group at Smart & Biggar.

“Ottawa is an important technology and innovation hub for Canada. We are committed to working with these companies to raise the level of IP strategy and awareness in the capital and bring commercial value to Canadian companies.”
