Former bar association president named as judge in Manitoba

Scott D. Abel has been appointed as a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench for Manitoba in Brandon.

A partner at Paterson Patterson Wyman and Abel in Brandon, Justice Abel has acted as a general practitioner with an emphasis on family law, criminal defence and civil litigation. Before joining his current firm, Justice Abel was with Sims and Company in Birtle, Man., and Sinclair and Associates in Winnipeg.

He is a former president of the Manitoba Bar Association and former vice-chair of the professional development committee of the Canadian Bar Association. Prior to his appointment, Justice Abel was also vice-president of the Western Manitoba Bar Association.

He replaces Justice John A. Menzies, who elected to become a supernumerary judge effective Sept. 1, 2017.
