It is easy to be in favour of drug courts. It is well known that a fair number of those accused of crimes — not just those facing drug charges — have problems with substance abuse. If drug use is responsible for people’s involvement in crime, why not use drug courts to help them get treatment?  

Before this justification is accepted, we would suggest on the basis of what we know about “drug courts,” that we should be cautious about investing resources into these institutions....
