First live webcast of treaty case advances reconciliation, public’s access to trials

The Ontario Superior Court has ordered what is believed to be the first gavel-to-gavel live streaming and archiving of a full trial.

In a precedent helpful to proponents of televised trials and other electronic media coverage of trial proceedings, Ontario Superior Court Justice Patricia Hennessy issued written reasons Jan. 5 for her oral order last September authorizing the webcasting and archiving of an ongoing trial — expected to last many months — in which 24 plaintiff First Nations claim a share in the billions of dollars...
