The regional director general and senior general counsel with Justice Canada, Jasvinder S. (Bill) Basran, has been named as a judge with the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Justice Basran joined the Department of Justice Canada in Vancouver after being admitted to the bar. His role was to practise tax litigation and appear before the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal. When he became general counsel and director of the B.C. tax law section at the Department of Justice, he gained the responsibility of managing a group of more than 60 lawyers and staff members. He was also a member of the national tax board of directors. In 2007, he was named regional director general of the B.C. regional office of the Department of Justice, where he had 400 employees. Justice Basran has also been a member of the Department of Justice executive committee and a member of the national litigation sector’s board of directors.

During his career, Justice Basran helped launch the Department of Justice’s national mentoring program and acted as the department’s champion for visible minorities. Justice Basran also played a key role in developing the department’s first pro bono program, which has grown to nine legal clinics in eight Canadian cities. He is a director of the Access Pro Bono Society of British Columbia.

Justice Basran replaces Justice Barbara L. Fisher who was appointed to the Court of Appeal of British Columbia on Sept. 14, 2017.
