Class action copyright claim takes on ‘obituary piracy’

Maritimes-based firm Stewart McKelvey has launched an application for the Federal Court of Canada to certify a class action copyright claim against Afterlife, a Quebec-based site that reproduces obituaries.

Afterlife, which started in 2017, promotes itself as “Canada’s largest database of deceased people.” In addition to searching for obituaries, users can send flowers and light virtual candles for the deceased.
