Competency assessments in Manitoba could face legal challenges, lawyer says

Expect court challenges should Manitoba’s law society choose to make mandatory proposed competency programs for its members, says a lawyer who disputed the regulator’s requirement of continuing professional development.

These comments come as the Law Society of Manitoba, as part of its 2017-2020 Strategic Plan, discusses possible elements of its “Cradle to Grave” initiative, described online as a way of “assessing and addressing the competence of lawyers at all stages of practice.”
