New regulations unveiled for risky syndicated mortgage market

Canada’s securities administrators have brought out a series of recommendations to reduce the risks for investors in syndicated mortgages, a move observers say will help bring some clarity in a market that has been increasingly seen as needing more oversight.

A syndicated mortgage investment (SMI) is a method of funding commercial or residential developments where two or more people pool their money to invest in large-scale real estate projects. The investment is a mortgage registered against title to the property that is being developed.
