Challenges will come, say lawyers opposing change to Newfoundland legal aid law

Court challenges are expected as Newfoundland axes the option legal aid recipients had of turning to the private bar for defence in the most serious of criminal cases.

In what is primarily a cost cutting move, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador has amended its Legal Aid Act, removing the option recipients had of retaining private defence lawyers for serious criminal charges.
