Two University of Ottawa law students have been awarded a $6,000 grant from the Alex Trebek Innovation and Challenge Fund.

Uttra Gautam and Selena Lucien will be using the money to develop tools to help consumers evaluate wireless contracts before purchasing cell phone and data plans.

Both students are part of the faculty of law’s Centre for Law, Technology and Society, and in addition to the Alex Trebek funding, the centre is contributing $3,000 to the project.

The goal is to create two distinct applications: an interactive and intelligent pre-purchase checklist and a contract analysis module, which will provide a systematic method for wireless consumers to review the terms of contract before they enter into negotiations with the wireless service providers. Gautam and Lucien expect the tools will help consumers make better informed choices while building their digital and legal literacy.

The Alex Trebek fund was created by the television game show host, who is an alumnus of the university, and is administered by the Michaëlle Jean Centre for Global and Community Engagement. The fund supports projects whose aim is to affect positive social change and promote the improvement in all sectors that influence the capacity of people to live healthy and productive lives.
