Changes to leave of absence requirements under B.C.’s Employment Standards Act

British Columbia has passed Bill 6, an amendment to the Employment Standards Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 113 (ESA) that will enhance the rights of employees who require unpaid leaves of absence in certain circumstances. In particular, the amendment establishes new leave entitlements for parents of children who go missing as a result of crime or pass away and enhances existing leave entitlements for new parents and for relatives of gravely ill family members.
