Judge elevated in New Brunswick

Justice Lucie A. LaVigne, a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of New Brunswick, trial division, has been named as a judge of the Court of Appeal of New Brunswick.

Justice LaVigne, who was called to the bar in 1980, was in private practice in Edmunston before being appointed to the bench in 2001. In her time working as a lawyer, she become known as an advocate for women’s equality and actively promoted women in the legal profession.

Justice LaVigne served on the board of directors of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) from 2010 to 2014 and was formerly president of the IAWJ’s Canadian chapter.

She is fluently bilingual and often speaks on legal topics, especially those related to women in the legal profession.

She replaces Justice J.C. Marc Richard, who was appointed chief justice of New Brunswick on May 1, 2018.
