Friday, October 19, 2018 @ 8:47 AM | By John Chunn

Stikeman Elliott announced the election of Marc Barbeau as chair of the firm. Barbeau succeeds William Braithwaite, who completed two terms as chair and will continue with his Toronto-based mergers and acquisitions (M&A) practice.

Barbeau has built a practice in M&A, corporate governance and reorganizations, and has led some of the most significant transactions in Canada. He has been recognized for his expertise in this regard. He’s an adjunct professor at McGill’s Faculty of Law and brings this additional perspective to his role as chair. Barbeau will continue his practice and role as a partner in the firm’s corporate department in Montreal.

Also appointed to the firm’s management team are new managing partners in three Canadian cities: Curtis Cusinato in Toronto, Warren Katz in Montreal and Chrysten Perry in Calgary.

Cusinato is a partner practising corporate and securities law. His expertise in cross-border M&A and capital markets transactions has been built over two decades, advising both public and private companies, multinational companies, as well as private equity groups and investment and merchant banks. His extensive experience covers a wide range of industries. He will continue his active practice and will assume this new role with co-managing partner, Anne Ristic, who has been in this role since 2016.

Katz is a partner and former head of the corporate group in Montreal. His practice focuses on M&A, private equity and corporate finance. He has extensive experience advising leading public and private companies in connection with acquisitions, divestitures, investments, public offerings and going private transactions. He also regularly represents underwriters in public offerings. In addition to his new role as managing partner, Katz will continue his active practice.

Perry, a Calgary partner and current co-head of the national energy group, has over 30 years’ experience in corporate and commercial law related to energy projects and development and mergers and acquisitions, both in conventional and emerging sectors. She is highly experienced in all aspects of the opportunities and challenges faced by the players in the energy industry. In concert with her new role as managing partner, Perry will maintain her successful practice in the Calgary market.

The new team of managing partners will join current managing partners, Ross MacDonald (Vancouver), and Justine Whitehead (Ottawa); co-managing partner, Ristic (Toronto); and managing principals in our international offices, Dean Koumanakos (London) and Kenneth Ottenbreit (New York).
