The Law Society of Ontario will present a doctor of laws degree, honoris causa (LLD), to Angela Swan at its call to the bar ceremony in Toronto on Jan. 25.

As part of its call ceremonies each year, the law society awards honorary doctorates to distinguished people in recognition of outstanding achievements in the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice. Recipients serve as inspirational keynote speakers for the new lawyers attending the ceremonies.

The law society’s press release said that Swan, called to the bar in 1970, is receiving the LLD in recognition of her work as a highly respected and dedicated lawyer and legal educator. Through her example and through her roles as lawyer, teacher, scholar, author, legal researcher and law reformer, she has been influential in the education of several generations of law students, lawyers and jurists in Canada. She also established herself as one of the pre-eminent experts in contract law in Canada.

She is counsel with Aird Belis LLP.

Law society treasurer Malcolm Mercer will award the honorary LLD to Swan, who will then deliver the keynote address to the new lawyers at the ceremony.
