Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) announced the appointment of Shelley-Mae Mitchell as chair of the partnership board, effective Sept. 1, 2020.

According to the firm’s press release, the partnership board provides overall direction, oversight and governance for the firm. The board is made up of elected regional representatives of partners from each of the firm’s offices in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.

Mitchell is a partner in the Vancouver office and advises clients on all aspects of labour and employment law. She has experience in a wide range of issues related to labour and employment, including all types of employment disputes, preventive advice and human rights complaints. She also has extensive experience in collective bargaining, grievance and labour arbitrations, and labour board cases such as strikes and unfair labour complaints. She has been a member of the partnership board since 2016 and, while contributing to the firm in her new leadership role, will also continue with her labour and employment practice.

Mitchell succeeds Alex De Zordo, who will continue his practice within the commercial litigation group in the Montreal office.

BLG national managing partner and CEO, John Murphy, said: “On behalf of all members of the firm, I wish to congratulate Shelley-Mae on her new role and thank Alex for his six years of service on the partnership board, three of which were as chair. His leadership and governance contributions over the past years have been invaluable. Shelley-Mae is the second woman in five years to be appointed as chair of the partnership board. At BLG we continue to strive to achieve diversity at all levels of the firm.”
